Romans – Chapter Five XVI

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6 NET).

Another way to view this reference to “at the right time” involves human cultural development through the ages. For example, Jesus entered human history at a point we now designate as the first century. Scholars and Biblical commentators have offered several observations that serve to validate this reference to “at the right time” from Romans 5:6…

“From the human perspective, there were many evident causes for the expansion of the church. Politically, there was the pax Romana, ‘the Roman peace,’ an official policy that provided an environment in which the early believers could propagate the Christian faith. Linguistically, koine (‘common’) Greek was the standard language of the people throughout the empire and was used in the writing of the New Testament. This unifying language made the Scriptures readily understandable everywhere the disciples went. Travel was relatively easy and safe; Roman roads expedited land travel and Roman fleets swept the Mediterranean of pirates. Thus, the gospel could be taken swiftly and safely from Jerusalem to other lands.” (1)

Another commentator adds…

“It was a time when the pax Romana extended over most of the civilized earth and when travel and commerce were therefore possible in a way that had formerly been impossible. Great roads linked the empire of the Caesars, and its diverse regions were linked far more significantly by the all-pervasive language of the Greeks. Add the fact that the world was sunk in a moral abyss so low that even the pagan cried out against it and that spiritual hunger was everywhere evident, and one has a perfect time for the coming of Christ and for the early expansion of the Christian gospel.” (2)

Our final source approaches this passage from an eternal perspective…

“It is surely no accident of history that Jesus, the Prince of Peace, was born in an era of peace that lasted only for a few decades… Elsewhere in Scripture, we read that the incarnation occurred in ‘the fullness of time’ (Gal. 4:4). Basically, the sense is that Christ came at the perfect time, the point God had determined before the ages began. He entered time and space exactly as the Lord foreordained, fulfilling God’s perfect plan of salvation.” (3)

Thus, we can say that Christ died at the right time in several respects….

  • In our personal lives, when we were powerless to help ourselves.
  • At an opportune time in human societal and cultural history.
  • From eternity past, for Jesus “…was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge…” (Acts 2:23 CSB).
